Even such a finely-tuned machine as a Porsche engine might occasionally run into trouble. The good news is that when you catch an engine problem early, it can usually be fixed or patched up long before it becomes an expensive repair job. If you notice any of the following five signs of engine problems, head down to your local Porsche dealer to get it sorted out.

You Notice Rough Idling

The powerful growl of an idling Porsche is a beautiful thing to hear. While idling, the engine’s rumble should be smooth and steady. If you notice it’s struggling or sputtering, or you have to rev to keep it from stalling, then you know you have engine trouble.

Rough idling might be caused by something as simple as old fuel if you haven’t driven your car in a while. But it might also indicate a struggling spark plug or coil pack, which needs to be replaced. It might also be due to a vacuum leak, worn sensors, a dirty intake plenum, or something else altogether. A good technician will quickly identify the problem for you.

You See Smoke Behind You

If you see black smoke billowing from your tailpipe in the rearview mirror, don’t panic. There are a variety of potential causes, most of which are simple to fix. It might be an overfill of oil, which often happens when an oil change is carried out by technicians unfamiliar with Porsche vehicles.

Another possible minor cause is a clogged up air filter, which leads to an excess of fuel in the fuel-air mixture of the combustion chambers. When this occurs, the excess fuel often burns off in the form of thick smoke. The smoke might also indicate a faulty oil separator, which is supposed to separate the oil from the air in the engine. In this case, you’ll need to have it repaired or replaced.

You’re Accelerating Sluggishly

With a vehicle that delivers such incredible acceleration, it’s easy to notice if you’re accelerating a little sluggishly. Possible causes for this are a fuel pump malfunction, clogged air filter, clogged fuel filter, dirty throttle body, faulty oxygen sensor, or clogged up catalytic converter. Again, you might need to have a professional figure out the culprit.

Your Coolant’s Leaking

If you have leaking engine coolant, you should notice quickly because of a sweet or musty smell, and a brightly-colored liquid pooling under your car when you park. Leaking coolant is not an emergency, but it’s also not a problem to be ignored. With insufficient coolant, your engine will start to heat up excessively, and that’s when serious problems develop.

Coolant leaks most often happen around the seals to the coolant distribution pipeline. It might also be coming from a blown gasket head, a cracked hose, a damaged heater core, or a broken radiator. Pop your hood and poke around to see if you can find its source. You might need a technician to find and fix it.

Your “Check Engine” Light Comes On

The final sign of engine trouble is the most obvious one. If your dashboard starts blinking the dreaded “check engine” light at you, don’t ignore it. Get down to your local dealer to find out what’s causing your onboard computerized monitors to sound the alarm.
