Your Porsche was designed and built to provide the superb handling and control that other drivers envy. To be able to handle any driving conditions, good quality tires are essential. Your tires are the only part of your Porsche in contact with the surface, and although modern tires are stronger than ever they will wear due to friction and damage. When it’s time to get new tires, your Porsche dealer has the right tires for you.

Is it Time to Get New Tires for your Porsche

Cracks in the Sidewall

Unlike many other potential car problems, damage to your tires is always easy to check by simple visual inspection. As your tires get older, the rubber starts to become less flexible, and this reduced flexibility can increase wear and tear. Your tire’s sidewalls can start to crack, and you may notice cuts or tracks in the sidewall.

Some of this damage may only be on the surface, but even surface damage can spread deeper. The heat caused by driving or weather conditions can cause these cuts to grow wider and this can lead to a leak in the tire.

Lincoln Penny Check

Your tire tread allows your tires to grip the road surface, and they also help to maintain traction in wet conditions. The rubber tread abrades due to friction with the rod surface and slowly wears down each time you drive. The more your tread wears, the more difficult it can become to effectively control your car. If the tread wears out completely, your car will become very dangerous to drive as the tires cannot grip the surface.

To test your tread, take a Lincoln penny and place it upside down in the center part of the thickest tread on one of your tires. If you cant see Lincoln’s hair, your tread is still ok, but if you see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire must be replaced immediately.

Tread Wear Bars

Modern tires are stronger than ever before, and they also have features that older tires don’t. One of these special features is the tread wear bars that are built into your tires. They serve to show the state of wear on the treads. The bars run perpendicular to the tread, and on newer tires they’re invisible. As your tires wear, these bars will gradually start to become visible. The bars will become more prominent as your tires continue to wear.

When you start to see wear bars, it’s time to call our service department. Our Porsche-trained technicians will examine your tires and can give you their expert advice.

Good tires increase your handling, reduce your fuel consumption, and help to keep you safe when you’re driving. We recommend regular tire rotation according to the service schedule to reduce wear and promote longer tire life. Even with the best car, your tires will eventually start to wear out. Call our service center at Porsche Chantilly, and we can check your tires and replace them if needed.
